Optical Properties of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Single-Crystals Doped with Terbium Oxide

A series of yttria-stabilized zirconia single-crystals doped with 0.000–0.250 mol% Tb4O7 was prepared by the optical floating-zone method. As shown XRD and Raman spectroscopy, all crystals had a cubic-phase structure. These were initially orange–yellow in color, which is indicative presence Tb4+ ions, but they then became colorless after being annealed H2/Ar atmosphere as result reduction to Tb3+. The absorption spectra unannealed samples show both 4f 8→4f 75d1 transition Tb3+ ions charge-transfer band. In addition, transmittance increased annealing. Under irradiation 300 nm light, single-crystal showed seven emission peaks visible region, corresponding decay from 5D3,4 excited state 7FJ (J = 6–0) states. most intense at 544 nm, corresponds typical strong green 5D4→7F5 ions.
